Hi John - thank you for contacting us. We understand the need to change behavior. MADD supports intervention through our educational prevention programs for K-21, and with offenders through the DWI court model of: in addition to legislated consequence, assessment to determine treatment needs along with stringent oversight. And, as terms of probation: frequent reporting to the court and meeting goals set by the court, to replace the old behavior with a new one, with the use of ankle monitoring or ignition interlock devices as needed.

Subject: 11-17-07 proposed MADD donations to treatment programs

Dear Mothers Against Drunk Driving Officials in Austin, Texas,

As a dues-paying new member of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, I would like to ask whether our non-profit group based in Austin has an annual tradition of donating some money toward helping to finance treatment programs for Central Texans who are addicted to alcohol or illicit drugs.

I raise this question because it seems painfully apparent to myself that if a Texan resident is addicted to alcohol or illicit drugs, that addiction severely undermines his very ability to insist on naming a "designated driver," for instance, upon his arrival at a social event where he plans to consume alcohol.

Addiction to alcohol or illicit drugs spawns a wide array of reckless and illegal and injurious activities on the part of that addict. Persons who are addicted to alcohol or illicit drugs are therefore several ...times (more likely) to cause an motor vehicle accident in which they subject another motorist to an injury than are persons who are NOT addicted to alcohol or illicit drugs.

It seems to me that the primary goal of our group ---- seeking to eliminate drunk driving --- should be achieved in part by financial contributions from MADD toward helping to significantly reduce the per-capita incidence of alcohol addiction or illicit drug addiction in our state.

I would appreciate receiving a reply letter from you in response to this suggestion from myself.

Sincerely and Best Wishes,

John Kevin McMillan,
