Subject: Is there a truly statewide UT Preventive Medicine Plan?

January 11, 2024

Dear Utah State Legislature House Majority Leader Mike Schultz,

I want to thank you again for your thoughtful December 6, 2023, e-mail  reply letter to me in which you kindly invited me to share with you concerns of mine relating to Utah.

I am writing you today to respectfully ask whether you believe that our statewide Utah  Preventive Medicine Health Care System is consistently emphasized enough to all members of the general public  and is consistently first-rate throughout our entire state?

If your answer to that question is "no", do you have any recommendations you plan to offer the Utah State House on how the Utah Legislature can help  reduce disparities in level of PREVENTIVE  medical care among the various multi-county regions, counties, and municipalities of Utah?

Below are three respective copyrighted online links that highlight the supreme importance of preventive medicine strategies for all Americans and all Utahns, respectively.

Please note, below,  that the University of Utah Health medical services provider at its official copyrighted website offers an enlightened emphasis on Preventive Medicine for all Utahns. Farther below,  last item, are exactly quoted  Preventive Medical Care Services for Women that are currently  advocated and provided  by the University of Utah Health  in Salt Lake City.

"PREVENTIVE CARE FOR WOMEN

"Women should schedule an annual checkup with a primary care provider (a family doctor that specializes in women’s health or an OB/GYN). During these visits, you can discuss health concerns and questions and get annual screenings recommended for women, including:

"Heart health: Your doctor will order tests for lipids, LDL and HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, blood sugar, and blood pressure.

"Breast health: Women should have regular breast exams and mammograms. Check with your primary care provider for current screening guidelines, especially if you have family history of breast cancer or other risk factors.

"Skin health: An annual skin exam and head-to-toe checks help your doctor keep an eye out for new or changing moles.

"Cervical health: Pap smear tests should be done regularly. Ask your doctor for more information about how often you should have this test done.

Bone health: This includes screening for bone density and osteoporosis with DEXA scan.

"Colonoscopy: Women should have a colonoscopy every 10 years starting at age 50 (your doctor may recommend starting screening earlier or getting a colonoscopy more often if you have family history of colon cancer or other risk factors).

"If you have trouble finding time to get in for a checkup, University of Utah Health offers monthly 5 for Life events that include a healthy breakfast, chair massage, nutrition education, and all of the appropriate tests and screenings above (except colonoscopies, which must be scheduled separately), all in just two hours. These events take place at our clinic locations all along the Wasatch Front to make it easy for every woman to get annual screenings."

Finally, Mr. Schultz, I would like to ask you whether you believe the State Government of Utah should sponsor and help finance the establishment of a proposed  new  "Utah Preventive Medical Services Research Center" in our state that potentially benefits any and all residents of Utah?

I will be very pleased if this public-policy brainstorming letter from myself  is helpful to you and your Utah State House colleagues.

Sincerely and Best Wishes,

John Kevin McMillan, the youngest grandson of first-rate Murray (UT) butcher shop owner and LDS member Parley McMillan, who would have enjoyed a much fuller natural longevity----he died in his 40s in the year 1933----if Grandfather McMillan had benefited from additional preventive medicine strategies in his own life.
