Subject: New version  Re: Jehovah’s Witnesses fight law on reporting child sex abuse to police - Reveal

https://revealnews.org/blog/jehovahs-fight-law-requiring-child-sex-abuse-be-reported-to-police/

From John Kevin McMillan, 535 South 200 East,

Apt. 912, Ninth Floor, Salt Lake City, UT 84111.

January 4, 2024

Dear Utah House of Representatives Majority Leader Mike Schultz,

l am writing to you today to express major concern about public-safety-related conduct by members of the "Jehovah's  Witnesses" religious denomination. That religious group is reportedly headquartered in New York City, New York.

Last month I learned for the first time that numerous members of the Jehovah's Witnesses denomination apparently reside in and hold congregation meetings  in the Salt Lake City area.

I learned about their presence here after  I crossed eastward from the southwestern corner  of the intersection of South State Street and 500 South in downtown Salt Lake City.

I was immediately greeted outdoors by two friendly ladies distributing religious literature at Washington Square on behalf of the Jehovah's Witnesses  denomination. The property on which they stood, which features a multi-story local government office building and the offices of Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall,  is jointly owned by the City of Salt Lake City and  Salt Lake County Government.

House Majority Leader Schultz, I need to respectfully ask you if you know of any possible  revisions  to state law here in Utah that might help to increase criminal-law penalties for any  Jehovah's Witnesses here in this state- capital city and U.S. state who allegedly failed to report alleged felony crimes or other  crimes that  they each directly witnessed in our state.

Below is an official link to a State of Utah website that describes an example in which the alleged lack of vigilantly helpful "Good Citizenship Skills" on the part of members of the  Jehovah's Witnesses denomination can be  flagrantly illegal:

https://dcfs.utah.gov/services/child-protective-services/#:~:text=Utah%20law%20requires%20any%20person,or%20a%20law%20enforcement%20agency

A key paragraph from the copyrighted  website:

directly above:

"Utah law requires any person who has reason to believe that a child has been subjected to abuse, neglect, or dependency to immediately notify the nearest office of Child and Family Services, a peace officer, or a law enforcement agency. Abuse, neglect, or dependency of a child can be physical, emotional, or sexual."

House Majority Leader Schultz,  I hope that a first-rate staff member for one of your Utah State House committees will be willing to pursue an investigation on whether applicable  revisions of state law here in Utah  are needed.

Those revisions can help fully  protect the legal right of Utahn law-enforcement agencies to arrest any member of any local "Jehovah's Witnesses" religious group who allegedly violated state law here  in Utah through their unconscionable  failure to report to local police the  crimes or motor vehicle accidents that they had  directly witnessed.
