Another free 24-hour-a-day telephone counseling service is the following Suicide Prevention hotline, which serves persons who are very depressed or emotionally down, regardless of whether they are at risk of attempting to commit suicide. That hotline's phone number is: 1-800-273-8255. Spanish-speaking staff members are available upon request through this service.
Another option for obtaining free telephone emotional-support assistance is the "Friendship Line" offering emotional support for lonely persons from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Central Time, Monday through Sunday. Their toll-free telephone number is: 1-800-971-0016.
This same phone number, 1-800-971-0016, can also be called 24-hours per day, seven days per week, by anyone at risk of attempting to commit suicide or experiencing any type of personal crisis and seeking a free telephone listening and emotional support service.
A fourth possibility, which was cited to me tonight by an Austin-based female staff member for the Suicide Prevention hotline service, is the "Compassionate Ears" free telephone emotional-support and listening service. This service closes at 10 p.m. each night and reportedly opens in the afternoon.
