Dear John,

Plant Sterols look very much like cholesterol, but have extra methyl groups; They seem to block cholesterol uptake. I however take both a high dose statin (blocks isoprenyl and cholesterol synthesis) and zetia, which is a cholesterol uptake inhibitor. I do not believe that cholesterol per se is the culprit, but rather oxidized cholesterol, which initiates inflammation.

Anyway, with Congestive Heart Failure, I am more worried about ventricular arrhythmias...

HOPE THAT YOU ARE ENJOYING THE TEXAS SUMMER,

Mike

Dear Michael,

The Promise activ product I found in the yogurt section of an H.E.B. supermarket tonight is advertised as being "clinically proven" to help reduce cholesterol. The ingredient that reportedly does that are natural plant sterols.

The same product, according to its manufacturer, should be consumed daily for maximum benefit.

Have you tried Promise activ yourself, and do you recommend it?

Also, do you find in Los Angeles that you sometimes wish it would rain? How many times did it rain this summer in Los Angeles? Are there any Rain-God worshipping religions in Los Angeles, and if so, how many members do those religious groups claim to have?

By the way, Michael, it often seems from the tabloid magazines that many of the inhabitants of your very famous city of Los Angeles are closer to being "infamities" than celebrities. Brittany Spear, according to a tabloid headline I read inside H.E.B. supermarket tonight, has told each of her two children that they are both "mistakes" she herself had made. Every week, it seems, Ms. Spear is being profiled in American magazines as being the antithesis of what a good mother is like.

Sincerely and Best Wishes,

John Kevin McMillan.
