Subject: 8-12-20 proposed Sodium-Reduction Act by TX Legislature

August 12, 2020

Dear State Senator Eckhardt,

Congratulations again on your very influential new role as the duly-elected State Senator for District 14.

I am very hopeful that you will be willing to author or sponsor a new bill in the Texas Senate that imposes government-mandated restrictions on the amount of sodium per serving that is permitted as an ingredient in processed foods or beverages produced commercially anywhere in the state of Texas and sold in supermarkets. In this way, you can make a very wise and truly life-saving statement on behalf of promoting heart-healthy lifestyles for all Texans.

You are a former full-time restaurant manager, as you had  politely mentioned to me when I spoke on the phone with you earlier this century during a prior tenure of yours as my duly-elected Travis County Commissioner for Precinct 2 (that was during a prior period when I was a rent-paying official tenant residing at 11411 Research Boulevard, Apt. 325, in northwest Austin).

Partly because of your very fine prior managerial experience in the restaurant industry, I feel that it would be especially appropriate for you to author or sponsor a Texas Sodium-Reduction bill in the Texas Senate.

Restaurant managers and restaurant employees not only strive to address the needs of consumers, but can also themselves benefit greatly from proposed legislation of this type.

I am reminded of the very tragic story I heard earlier this century about a female former manager at IHOP 290 franchise-owned chain restaurant, herself a heavyset Hispanic lady named Monica, who reportedly died from a heart attack a matter of months after she left her position at the IHOP 290 chain restaurant along Koenig Lane near Interstate Highway 35 in north Austin.

Incidentally, I read recently that your own prior role as successful restaurant manager occurred in New York State, which is very impressive.

Even if the proposed Texas Sodium Reduction Act bill requires only a 10 percent reduction by a specified date (such as December 31, 2021) in the amount of sodium permitted as an ingredient in any given canned good or bottled beverage item produced in Texas and sold in Texan supermarkets, this could significantly reduce the number of heart attacks and strokes that Texans sustain each year.

It's also noteworthy that most Texan restaurants' kitchens prepare dishes relying in part on food products and beverages that have been processed commercially. So this proposed reduced-sodium requirement will also help to protect and enhance the cardiovascular health of restaurant guests.

Senator Eckhardt, I hope to hear from you soon in regard to proposed legislation from the next session of the Texas Legislature that CAN reduce the number of heart attacks and strokes that Texans and visitors to Texas sustain each year.

Incidentally, I am a proud subscriber to "Nutrition Action" newsletter, a very respected healthful-living-theme publication that is published by the globally-admired Washington, D.C.-based non-profit organization "Center for Science in the Public Interest".

I feel sure that a helpful staff member at the Center for Science in the Public Interest will be happy to offer you examples of actual sodium-reduction legislation that some U.S. state in the United States is either currently considering or has already approved and implemented.

This reminds me to mention that I sense that possibly our Texas Legislature in prior years may have been behind other state legislatures on approval of measures to protect the health of residents of their own respective states. Some municipal governments have also emphasized the crucial healthful-living theme. As I'm sure you know, one great leader at promoting healthier foods and beverages in New York City, New York, during his tenure as Mayor there was Michael Bloomberg.

Mr. Bloomberg might also be willing to kindly offer you ideas for possible new proposed legislation in the Texas Legislature on behalf of reducing sodium levels in commercially processed foods and beverages that are offered for sale in retail supermarkets in Texas.

Senator Eckhardt, I will be very pleased if this very tentative recommendation for a new state law proves to be helpful to you in your truly great and very influential new role as State Senator for District 14.

Sincerely and Best Wishes,
John Kevin McMillan, a gainfully-employed constituent of yours in Senate District 14, and President of the one-member (myself, only) and non-Christian "Progressive Prohibitionist Religion".
