The current official City of Austin website contains the following information about the City welcoming new applications for Austin 911-emergency dispatcher positions, and states that Austin 911 staff receive a combined total of about 1 million phone calls per year at their call center. 

"You are the first 'first responder' during an emergency. You will be the voice of the police department and will gather important information that will ensure that the police will arrive to the scene of the emergency as quickly as possible and that the officer will have intelligence on the situation they are responding to. You will play the vital role of reassuring citizens, gathering vital information and documenting that information as quickly and accurately as possible."
