To: Austin American-Statesman Managing Editor John Bridges and Editor-in-Chief Bill Church.

April 17, 2019

Dear Mr. Bridges and Mr. Church,

Earlier today, I received the following very surprising rejection letter from a reporter for your newspaper who apparently indicated that he represents the entire Metro Desk staff, including any and all editors, reporters, and other members of your Metro Desk staff.

That reporter of yours was apparently responding to an e-mail carbon-copy I had directly sent to the "metrodesk@statesman.com". His own e-mail address and name were not specifically cited in carbon-copies I had e-mailed to a variety of public officials, civic groups, and media organizations on a very recent letter (below) of mine.

I am also sending you a courtesy carbon-copy verifying for you that it was the Statesman Metro Desk staff, rather than any particular reporter or editor at your Metro Desk, to whom the cited public-policy-theme e-mail letter of mine had been addressed.

I would appreciate receiving a courtesy reply letter from either of you high-ranking editors, clarifying whether you believe that that one reporter of yours can in fact "represent" and speak on behalf of your entire Metro Desk staff, such as by himself prohibiting any additional e-mails from me at your Metro Desk e-mail address of metrodesk@statesman.com .

If you do in fact endorse that reporter's conduct toward me that was apparently on behalf of the entire "Metro Desk" staff, I would appreciate your informing me of which editors or reporters or officials on your staff, such as your distinguished publisher, ARE willing to accept e-mails from me, along with the correct e-mail addresses for my contacting those Statesman editors or reporters or other officials.

Sincerely and Best Wishes,
John Kevin McMillan.

I apologize to each of you for two typographical errors I somehow committed in my very recent brainstorming letter, below, that was directly addressed to City of Austin Commission on Seniors staff members.
The two errors occurred when I attempted to accurately transcribe a 2016 quote from then-Precinct-3 Constable (and currently Travis County Sheriff) Sally Hernandez that I had found this month in an online edition of the "Oak Hill Gazette" newspaper.

The following is the corrected version of that statement from Ms. Hernandez, with the word "me" now being inserted and the word "senior" now being correctly spelled, and each of those two corrections being bold-faced by me in order to highlight them in this particular context:

"With over 34 years of law enforcement experience, I can tell you the two areas of crime that anger me the most are crimes against children and crimes against our senior citizens."

As a courtesy to each of you, I have also inserted each of those typographical corrections into the text of my brainstorming letter, below.

Thank you to each of you for your kind patience and understanding on this. I value having very fine credibility as an accurate and honest writer and philanthropy-minded single adult resident.

Sincerely and Best Wishes,

John Kevin McMillan of northwest Austin.

Dear Austin Commission on Seniors Staff Members,

I would also like to share with your very influential advisory commission some online links that might prove to be helpful:

http://www.betterworld.net/quotes/senior-citizen-quotes.htm

This link offers an abundance of insightful and memorable quotations about senior citizens. My hope is that with permission from the editor or publisher of the above online webpage, Senior Citizen Centers in Austin could permanently display on their walls several or many of these fine quotes, along with portraits of the authors of those quotes.

One of the better quotes from that webpage comes from Benjamin Franklin: "Those who love deeply never grow old; they may die of old age, but they die young."

Another link that might be of keen interest to your advisory commission is to a website for the Institute for Dementia Research and Prevention at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center of the Louisiana State University System in Baton Rouge, with that institute's phone number being (225) 763-2973:

https://idrp.pbrc.edu/information/faqs/

It is very likely (and I haven't found the time yet to research this online) that the UT-Austin Dell Medical School will be conducting or has conducted medical research that is especially helpful to senior citizens in this state-capital city. Any such research findings could then be presented at a very inspirational symposium or workshop here in Austin that's possibly co-sponsored by your Austin Commission on Seniors.

I would also like to share with you a very impressive statement I found online from then-Precinct-3-Constable Sally Hernandez (herself currently the Travis County Sheriff), as quoted in the "Oak Hill Gazette" of August 18, 2016:

"With over 34 years of law enforcement experience, I can tell you the two areas of crime that anger me the most are crimes against children and crimes against our senior citizens."

I would like to respectfully recommend that your commission consider inviting Sheriff Hernandez to give a speech before your advisory board inside City Hall. In that speech, Sheriff Hernandez could offer your commission public-policy recommendations on how the City Government of Austin could do more to deter and investigate violent crimes and other crimes that victimize senior citizens here.

I am also hopeful that your advisory commission will consider inviting a speech before your group by an expert on state and federal laws that protect senior citizens in Austin from being victimized by various forms of elder abuse, including sexual abuse or physical abuse.

The invited speaker could give a statement to your group on what the impact of anti-abuse state and federal laws have been on senior citizens here in Austin, and whether the City Government of Austin and residents of Austin could do more to comply in full with that law.

I hope that this follow-up brainstorming letter is helpful to your Austin Commission on Seniors.

Sincerely and Best Wishes,

John Kevin McMillan,
