Subject: TrafficLight Cameras Reduce Injuries,Earn Rev for Govt

December 22, 2023

Dear Utah Legislature House of Representatives Majority Leader Mike Schultz,

I greatly appreciate your nice reply letter to me on December 6, 2023, in which you invited to me to share with you concerns of mine about Utah.

It often seems as if nearly every day here in Utah a very alarming news story in our state  highlights yet another dangerously deranged motorist who in a flagrantly reckless manner drove through a red light at a street intersection in our state.

Directly below is an online link to a shocking news story about an 18-year-old male motorist in Utah who this month allegedly  drove through a red light in our state:

https://gephardtdaily.com/top-stories/uhp-man-18-jailed-after-100-mph-chase-through-salt-lake-city-davis-county-ramming-officers-vehicle/

That motorist's allegedly very  dangerous violations of state law in Utah occurred at a time when he was allegedly driving in excess of the speed limit while  attempting to elude law-enforcement officers in pursuit of  himself.

Directly below is a related online link to a recent copyrighted online report by a first-rate  nationwide private law firm, Phillips Law,  that maintains a  law firm office in Salt Lake City:0f

https://phillipslaw.com/red-light-accidents-ut/

A key copyrighted  statement from that copyrighted report by the Phillips Law firm:

"Unfortunately, traveling along the roads and highways of Utah has become increasingly more dangerous. As more and more motorists enter the roadways of the state, the likelihood of an auto accident becomes more probable due to road congestion, especially along the most popular streets and intersections. A Utah red light crash happens to be one of the most commonly seen types of motor vehicle collision."

Utah State  House Majority Leader Schultz, I urge you to please ask your colleagues in the Utah House to approve a proposed new state law that authorizes and provides funding for installation of dozens of traffic cameras at each of the  street intersections in Utah where the respective  combined fatal-accidents rate  and motor-vehicle crashes rate were among the highest in our state during  the multi-year period ever since January 1, 2020.

I would like to call your attention to  the following online  link to a copyrighted online report by the Texas-based "National Coalition for Safer Roads" nonprofit organization:

https://ncsrsafety.org/promoting-red-light-safety-with-traffic-cameras-benefits-and-challenges/#:~:text=By%20using%20traffic%20cameras%20at,and%20promoting%20overall%20road%20safe

Key statements in that official copyrighted website include:

"Research has shown that traffic cameras can be highly effective in reducing red light violations and related accidents. According to a study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the use of traffic cameras reduced red light violations by 40% at intersections where they were installed. Additionally, the same study found that there was a 24% reduction in the rate of fatal accidents caused by red light violations in cities with traffic cameras.

"The use of traffic cameras has also been successful in various municipalities across the United States. For example, in Seattle, the implementation of traffic cameras resulted in a 30% reduction in red light violations and a 42% reduction in accidents caused by red light violations. Similarly, in Chicago, the use of traffic cameras led to a 19% reduction in fatal accidents caused by red light violations."

House Majority Leader Schultz, I am very hopeful that this public policy-minded brainstorming letter from myself is helpful to you and your colleagues in the Utah State House of Representatives.

Sincerely and Best Wishes,

former Texas DPS full-time staff member and current gainfully employed single white male adult  permanent Utahn resident  John Kevin McMillan.
