Subject: Re: Need for UT-produced Comprehensive 'UT Almanac'
From permanent Utahn resident John Kevin McMillan of Salt Lake City, Utah.

December 31, 2023

Dear Utah State House of Representatives Majority Leader Mike Schultz,

Happy New Year to yourself, your relatives, and your Utah State Government colleagues.

After further review of the online links to "almanacs" in other states that I shared with you in my December 29 brainstorming letter (farther below) to you, I need to mention  that the cited "almanac" for Rhode Island was actually  published in 1930,  and that the cited statewide almanac for New Mexico was apparently published in the early 1990s.

My primary  intent in my leisuretime brainstorming letter  was to offer you examples of statewide  almanacs and  other types of  almanacs in a variety of topic areas  that have been published in other U.S. states.

I am hopeful  that you and other State Government  of Utah officials, along with news media organizations and Utah State Library officials, might possibly  want to draw ideas and information
from what you believe to be the very  best and most applicable for Utah  of the  themes and categories  used by a variety of almanac editors in other  respective states.

That proposed review by you first-rate State of Utah  officials of other U.S. states' almanacs might  help facilitate  the compilation of a completely  new and truly unique  Utah-produced statewide almanac that highlights the distinctive attributes of our great state,  the uniqueness of Utah's history, and the Herculean  challenges facing Utah and Utahns of  today.

Below are additional online links I have obtained to almanacs in other U.S. states that I hope might be useful to yourself and to  other state officials, including  Utah State Library officials:

Dear Utah State House Majority Leader Mike Schultz,

Thank you again for your friendly December 6, 2023, e-mail reply letter that invited me to share with you concerns of mine about Utah.

I am the youngest son of Murray (UT) native Dr. Calvin McMillan, a longtime educator and promoter of lifelong education through his career as a Botany Professor and plant ecology researcher for the University of Texas at Austin. Father had earned both his Bachelor's Degree and his Master's Degree at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City.

I strongly believe that any and all Utahn public-policymakers, students, educators, businesses, members of the general public, and visitors to our wonderful state are currently put at a major disadvantage.

That disadvantage derives from the current absence of a truly comprehensive and fully-up-to-date Utah "Facts on File"(registered trademark company name)-style online and hard-copy reference almanac for our entire state.

We Utahns without a first-rate and complete "Utah Almanac" on our home library bookshelf or school library or public library bookshelf or workplace bookshelf are deprived of a golden opportunity for developing statewide pride in our state, a sense of full connectedness to and camaraderie with all other Utahns, and current in-depth knowledge about and invaluable new insights about our entire state and other Utahns.

We Utahns are also currently deprived of the opportunity for enjoying immediate and easy-to-obtain year-round access to the full array of pertinent fully up-to-date statistics and factual information relating to the economy of Utah, the history of inventions in Utah, demographics-related sociological issues, public safety-related issues, public health-related facts about Utah of today, the environmental quality of Utah, the history of law-enforcement in our state, factual profiles about each and every county and city or town of Utah, profiles on noteworthy civic groups and religious groups and political groups in Utah, cultural and political and religious leaders of Utah, the culinary history of Utah, etc.

Utah House Majority Leader Schultz, I learned today through online research that numerous respective states in our western region of the USA currently benefit greatly from annual compilation of a statewide or multi-county regional almanac for the state that is sponsored either directly by their state government, such as by their State Library or their state's Office of the Secretary of State state agency, or by a college, or by a news media company in that state.

I hope that the online links (below) that I obtained today will help to promote dialogue among members of your Utah State House of Representatives and other government employees in Utah, librarians in Utah, educators in Utah, news media professionals and authors and book publishers in Utah, businesses throughout Utah, Chambers of Commerce employees throughout Utah, and civic groups in Utah about how our great state can get the truly authoritative and factually accurate regularly updated online and hard-bound "Utah Almanac" that we Utahns richly deserve.

Sincerely and Best Wishes,
permanently alcohol-free (ever since 1990) and lifelong-tobacco-free very anti-marijuana-minded single adult white male British-German-American, lifelong American citizen, Nebraska native, and permanent Utahn resident John Kevin McMillan.
My solo-occupancy rental-apartment unit home address ever since June 1, 2022: 535 South 200 East,
Apt. 912, Ninth Floor, Salt Lake City, UT 84111. I myself am a former full-time newspaper reporter and the founder and only member of the implicitly deistic and factually focused "Progressive Prohibitionist Religion"----a non-proselytizing and public policy-minded alcohol-free, pro-law-enforcement new religion that does not agree to having a second member at any time in the foreseeable future. (I might add that my one-member-only fully independent religion is not currently registered with your state government.)
