Subject: Increase penalty for UT drug dealers who sell to kids?

March 8, 2024

Dear Utah State Legislature House Majority Leader Mike Schultz,

After briefly reviewing  a copyrighted first-rate online report (online link, below)  from the Fillmore Spencer Law Firm---a highly-regarded Utahn  law firm with law offices  in Provo, Murray,  and St. George--- I would like to pose three  questions to you:

(1) Has there been a thorough and authoritative recent study funded by the State of Utah that has determined whether the current "Drug Court" system here in Utah has been effective at promoting significantly reduced recidivism by Utahns who pleaded guilty to an illicit drug offense in a Drug Court judicial proceeding?

(2)  Do you support increasing the current criminal-law penalty to any drug dealer in Utah who specifically  sells or attempts to sell or give an illicit drug in our state  to a minor under age 18?

(3) Do you know of any way that state or local government agencies here in Utah can help protect currently illicit-drug-free Utahns under age 30  from being led astray by illicit-drug dealers or illicit-drug addicts in Utah  who  attempt to persuade the drug-free Utahns to "give cocaine a try," as the former group  might put it, and who in some cases may themselves actively collude with and be paid by  illicit-drug dealers in the alleged corruption of minors?

House Majority Leader Schultz, I will be very pleased if any of these three public-policy questions prove to be helpful this session to yourself and your also-courageously idealistic Utah State House colleagues.

Best Wishes,

permanent Utah resident John Kevin McMillan, 535 South 200 East, Apt. 912, Ninth Floor, Salt Lake City, UT 84111.
