Subject: 12-17-20 urgent need for national recyclable-items-collections locations hotline and website

December 17, 2020

Dear President-Elect Joe Biden,

As you of course already know, there is an urgent need to increase nationwide participation in recycling by as many American citizens and immigrants and visitors in the United States as possible.

I am very hopeful that you will consider asking the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency or some other federal agency to offer a toll-free hotline phone service that anyone anywhere in the USA can call any day of the year in order to find out the nearest location to which that person can take specified trash items for recycling.

To name one example of this type of issue: Here in Austin, Texas, I have a need to identify the nearest location that accepts used plastic H.E.B. Supermarket chain shopping bags for recycling. I know of at least one H.E.B. location in Austin that has offered that service to local residents and visitors. However, I do not believe that the H.E.B. store location closest to me offers that service.

At the very least, I feel that there is an urgent need for a federally-sponsored online website that makes it easy for anyone anywhere in the USA to obtain quick information about the nearest recyclable-items-drop-off locations for each and every one of the cited categories of recyclable items.

Which location in northeast Austin accepts glass bottles and then assists in having them recycled? I do not currently know the answer to that question. If there were a federally-sponsored consolidated website offering that type of factual information, it would be very helpful to me.

The proposed federally-sponsored website could invite visitors to that website to cite the zip code where they are situated. In my case, I would type  "78753" at that federal website. The website could then immediately inform me about each of the locations in my geographical zip code section of Austin that accept recyclable items of a specified type (glass bottles or plastic bags, for instance).

I think everyone in the United States is very concerned about depletion of our natural resources and the absence of a current nationwide strategy for recycling many of the recyclable items, with plastic products often being tossed along the roadway or thrown into public waterways. As you know, plastic products are not biodegradable: their polluting presence is an eyesore,  a possible safety hazard, and a threat to the ecosystems subjected to those trash items.

It seems to me that many Americans are concerned about future scenarios in which the national security of the United States can be imperiled if one or more foreign countries that have provided American companies with raw materials in the past suddenly impose a restriction or ban on imports to the USA.

As you of course know, many countries resent American society. They believe that Americans overconsume and pollute and waste natural resources. Many countries also resent American society because they are aware that according to one factual statistic I read several years ago, two-thirds of the Global Warming Effect has reportedly been inflicted on this planet by American society.

The less that American society has to rely on foreign nations for raw materials, the better.

One factual reference on this I would like to share with you, President-Elect Biden, is the following online account:
Plastics imports on the rise in U.S. (plasticstoday.com)

I would also like to tentatively suggest that you consider recommending to Congress a possible new federal law that provides financial incentives for businesses such as apartment complexes and condominium-complex management companies and restaurants to participate in recycling.

I myself greatly appreciate the large recyclables-only dumpster provided at my current apartment complex near the multi-unit building where I live.  I sometimes wonder, though, whether other  apartment complexes in Austin, Texas, are offering that type of service to their tenants.

President-Elect Joe Biden, I hope that this very tentative brainstorming letter is helpful to you and your innovative and conscientious team who will be officially guiding our country beginning on January 20, 2021.

Congratulations again on your new official role beginning on January 20, 2021, as our truly great U.S. President,
and Best Wishes,
