Subject: 9-4-20 question for Sen. Eckhardt re: refunds on recycled plastic bottles

September 4, 2020

Dear Texas Senate District 14 State Senator Eckhardt of the Austin area,

On Monday of this week I purchased an 11.5-ounce plastic bottle of "Simply Orange" (registered trademark name) fruit juice here in Austin.

The back of the bottle contained a recently-copyrighted request, "PLEASE RECYCLE", in all-capitalized letters.

Immediately below that request I found the following statement:
"HI, ME 5 c (a symbol for cents), OR 10 c (a symbol for cents) CA CRV."

Simply Orange Juice Company is headquartered at Apopka, Florida, 32703, USA. The bottle of orange juice I purchased that was produced by that company bears the copyright date of 2018.

Senator Eckhardt, I am writing you today to ask you if you believe that the Texas Legislature should follow the lead set by Hawaii, Maine, and Oregon by approving a new state law for the Lone Star State that offers financial refunds to persons who recycle their plastic bottles. I would mention California in that list, but I am not sure what "CRV" means.

As you are no doubt painfully aware, discarded plastic products are NOT biodegradable. They exacerbate our state's already-severe and unsightly litter problem, play a major role in congestion of our state's public landfills, and cause widespread destruction of our land and waterways throughout our entire state ---including along the beaches of (and inside) the Gulf of Mexico near our state.

Senator Eckhardt, I hope to hear from you soon in response to this tentative public-policy suggestion from myself.

Sincerely and Best Wishes,
John Kevin McMillan, a law-abiding, gainfully-employed, permanently-teetotaling, single adult English-Scottish-German-American Anglo male constituent of yours.
