Subject: Fw: PERCENTAGE OF 911 Calls in Utah in 2022 that were made by Mistakenet,
July 28, 2023

Dear Utah DPS Public Information Officer Sgt. Cameron Roden,

I am hopeful that several of  these additional  carbon-copy recipients might also be willing to offer ideas and information to the  Utah DPS on how to reduce the percentage of all 911 cell-phone calls in our state that were unintended 911 calls made by mistake.

The smaller the number of unintended 911 cell-phone calls here in Utah, the faster the Police,  Firefighter, and EMS response time will be for crime victims, fire victims, motor-vehicle  accident victims,  and  individuals having a medical crisis in our state.

Thank you again, Sgt. Roden, for your state agency's very  kind interest in this major public-safety issue for all of us Utahns.

Sincerely and Best Wishes,
former Texas DPS full-time clerical employee and current Utahn restaurant support-staff employee John Kevin McMillan.
I might add that I feel sure that my Murray (UT) grandfather, Parley McMillan, who owned a butcher shop in Murray in the 1920s and early 1930s, would have strongly supported a  reduction in unintended 911 cell-phone calls in Utah had Grandfather been alive today.

Subject: PERCENTAGE OF 911 Calls in Utah in 2022 that were made by Mistake
July 27, 2023

Dear Utah DPS Public Information Officer Sgt. Cameron Roden,

I would also like to share with you directly quoted text from a recent online report at the official State Government of Connecticut website.

That report offers a very alarming estimate on the level of frequency of unintended 911 cell-phone calls in the USA (and it is not clear to me whether the estimates  below are statewide estimates for Connecticut or nationwide estimates):

"Accidental 9-1-1 Calls From Wireless Phone Pose Risk to Public Safety

"Individual 911 Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs) have estimated that between 25 and 70% of their wireless calls are unintentional, clogging up their phone lines and risking their ability to respond to real emergencies....

"The accidental 9-1-1 calls cause a major problem for the public safety community, which spends time and resources to determine whether the 9-1-1 calls are real or  accidental.  Because the public safety operator does not know whether the 9-1-1 call is accidental or real, the public safety operator's general practice is to remain on the line in an attempt to make that determination.  In some cases, if no one is on the line, the operator can disconnect and call the user back to verify whether the original call was accidental.  However, if no one answers, the operator may be compelled to spend more time trying to reach the caller or even to dispatch emergency services to the caller's location.  These efforts not only waste resources, but they also divert scarce public safety personnel from other 9-1-1 calls reporting real emergencies...."

Sgt. Roden, I want to thank you again for the friendly reply letters you kindly  wrote and sent to me in recent months. I hope that today's  public safety-theme  letter from me will also appeal to you and your  Utah DPS colleagues.

Sincerely and Best Wishes,
John Kevin McMillan, 535 South 200 East, Apt. 912, Salt Lake City, UT 84111.

July 27, 2023

Dear Utah Department of Public Safety state agency Public Information Officer Sergeant Cameron Roden,

I need to respectfully ask you if the Utah Department of Public Safety state law-enforcement agency here in Utah has compiled a statewide estimate and county-by-county estimate on the percentage of all 911 cell phone calls received by 911 Dispatchers in Utah in calendar year 2022 that the caller had not intended to call.

I was reminded of this issue during online Googling I pursued today.

Do you also have an estimate on the total number of hours of delay time and total personnel-related expenses that those "Dialed 911 by Mistake Here in Utah" cell phone calls caused in calendar year 2022 here in the Beehive State?

I hope to hear from you soon, Sgt. Roden.

I hope to hear from

 you soon, Sgt. Roden.

Sincerely and Best Wishes,
