Dear Utah Department of Agriculture Public Information Officer Bailee Woolstenhulme,

Thank you for your April 15, 2022, reply letter (below) to me, which you helpfully carbon-copied to numerous other recipients.

I am very hopeful that your state-government agency will identify a funding source, such as a federal agency or non-profit foundation, that might help to finance establishment of a new program in your department. That proposed new program could provide financial incentives and consulting services to farmers in Utah for the planting and cultivation and marketing of edible agricultural-produce crops and ornamental-display crops, respectively, that are all botanical plants native to Utah.

This new program will also be very helpful toward conservation of water and protection of the environment here in the Beehive State. I also feel sure that the proposed new program will help to instill even greater statewide pride in our wonderfully wholesome state of Utah by as many residents of our state as possible.

Best Wishes,
John Kevin McMillan, the youngest biological son of environmental-protection-minded Botany researcher, Botany professor, and Murray native Dr. Calvin McMillan. His father, Parley McMillan, owned a butcher shop in Murray. My father, Dr. Calvin McMillan, was a distinguished alumnus of the University of Utah and a former Elder of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Hello John,

I apologize for the slow response. At this time there are not any programs that would promote the growing and selling of Utah native plants through our department. What we do offer to help combat drought and to promote efficient water use on Utah farms is our Water Optimization grant program. This program helps farmers and ranchers improve their irrigation systems and helps optimize and more efficiently use water on their crops and for watering livestock. We have seen a significant increase in the want for this program as our applications were up 300% last year. If you would like to know more about this program, I would be happy to provide you with more information.

Thank you,

Dear Public Information Officer Woolstenhulme,

As you must be very aware, Utah reportedly has long been the second-driest state in the entire United States.
Recent multi-decade exacerbation of Utah's already-dry conditions from the Global Warming Effect is reportedly occurring during an also-recent multi-year period of rapid population growth here in the Beehive State.

Has your first-rate Utah Department of Agriculture begun a program to encourage farmers throughout Utah to raise and sell  crops in our state that are native to Utah and therefore require no or only minimal irrigation?

If so, which native plants of Utah is your first-rate state agency urging farmers of Utah to grow or begin growing?

With Friendly Best Wishes,
former full-time daily newspaper reporter and current Salt Lake County restaurant-industry support-staff employee John Kevin McMillan.
