The pessimist, who no doubt jokes perversely about expected "nuking them" or "getting nuked by them" scenarios, demands a reply from an honorable optimist.
The optimist might ask:
Shouldn't American foreign policy be guided by a deeper understanding about what prompts any given foreign nation or any given militant group or terrorist group, to balk at dialogues and discussions, and to instead pursue spontaneous acts of random violence or threats of violence against others?
