Among the often-difficult words from everyday life are: "privilege", "mannequin", "exhilarating", "dissipation," "manifold", "ubiquitous", and "ostentatious".
This type of "Everyday Language Spelling Bee" would help to promote a sense of awareness by children about which of the words out there are the ones they are MOST likely to encounter in their everyday life.
The spelling bee could require each child to not only spell the word, but to also provide one definition of that word that is acceptable to the judges.
This would offer a deeper, more profound educational benefit to youths who participate in the spelling bee. It would encourage contestants to make fuller use of their intellects by actually constructing a sentence aloud that contains the cited vocabulary word from everyday life.
